The Jungfrau region with its approximately 6,000 inhabitants is one of the most famous tourist regions in Switzerland, not least because of its immediate proximity to the world-famous mountain panorama around the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. For more than a decade, the hotel businesses in the two main towns of Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen have recorded around one million overnight stays per year - and the trend is rising slightly (BFS 2018b). This is reflected in their economic structure: more than three-quarters of all employees worked in the third sector in 2015 (FSO 2018a); the share of micro and small enterprises (up to 49 employees) was more than 85% in 2016 (FSO 2016a). The construction industry is also growing - private construction investments in Grindelwald more than tripled between 2013 and 2016 (FSO 2016b).
